Abstract
883,529. Armoured fabrics. CANADA, MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE. May 21, 1957 [April 2, 1957], No. 16179/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 141 Armour for protecting the body comprises a plurality of units of fabric the extensibility of each unit being different from that of any other unit and the units being arranged in decreasing order of extensibility from the front to the rear of the armour. The different degrees of extensibility may be obtained by different methods of weaving and/or by using different kinds or sizes of fibres. The Specification shows with the aid of graphs that a given weight per square foot of the armour is capable of absorbing more energy than a corresponding weight of armour formed from a similar fabric but having a constant degree of extensibility from front to rear. A multiple weave for imparting a high degree of extensibility is described with reference to Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). A suitable fibre having a high extensibility is nylon and one having a low extensibility is a saponified acetate having the name "Fortisan X36", (Registered Trade Mark). Actual examples of armour are described having two and four units of fabric. Each unit may comprise a number of similar layers. Specification 783,001 is referred to.
