Abstract

905,771. Builders' hoists. WOODALLDUCKHAM CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. March 27, 1961 [May 6, 1960], No. 16161/60. Class 78 (3). Associated with the or each shaft gate of a builder's or like hoist having control means for the hoisting mechanism adapted to be operated by a pull cable there is provided a safety mechanism comprising a device which, when the gate is closed, maintains a bight of predetermined size in an interlock cable associated with the operator's pull cable but, when the gate is open, permits reduction of the bight to introduce slack in the interlock cable whereby operation of the hoisting mechanism in response to normal movement of the pull cable is prevented. As shown, Fig. 1, an interlock cable 3 passes from the control lever 2 of the hoist motor 1, through bight-forming devices 5 associated with each gate 6, to a drum 7a of a differential pulley 7. A stop 9 is provided so that the permitted movement of cable 3 is sufficient to move the lever 2 from the brake position to the hoist position but is less than the slack which is introduced into the cable by the device 5 when a gate 6 is opened. An operator's pull cable 10 is secured to the drum 7b of the pulley 7. Each device 5, Fig. 2, comprises a double sheave pulley 5c mounted on an axle 5e secured to side plates 5a and a double sheave pulley 5d mounted on a removable axle 5f which is secured to the gate 6 by a chain 5g that when the gate is opened, the axle 5d is withdrawn, thereby allowing the pulley 5d to move up the side-plates 5a to produce slack in the cable 3. The full permitted movement of the cable 3 resulting from rotation of the pulley 7 to draw the stop 9 into engagement with a fixed guide 8 is then insufficient to move the control lever 2 from its braking condition. In a modification, the differential pulley 7 may be replaced by a simple pulley and the cable 3 passed over it to constitute the pull cable. Other modifications of the arrangement of the interlock, control and pull cables are described, Figs. 4-6 (not shown). Specification 739,382 is referred to.
