Abstract
905,611. Coating with metals. TECHNOGRAPH PRINTED CIRCUITS Ltd. Oct. 1, 1958 [Oct. 1, 1957], No. 30709/57. Class 82 (2). In a process of continuously coating a metal such as copper with a fusible alloy such as a tin-lead solder by transferring the moten alloy to the metal by a roller which is partly immersed in the molten alloy bath covered with a flux layer, the metal contacts the roller above the bath and the roller is continuously wiped on the rising side and a meniscus is maintained just above the bath level to avoid any dross or flux being carried out of the bath on the roller. The coating roller 14 is partly immersed in the molten alloy bath maintained at a level 13 and an idler roller 15 also partially immersed is pressed against roller 14 by a spring 16 and ensures a flow of flux against the descending side of the roller. A baffle 17 tangential to the roller 14 below the level 13 prevents the flux and dross adhering to the rising side of the coating roller. A spring loaded upper roller 18 positively driven at the same speed as roller 14 holds the workpiece against the coating roller and it may be coated with a resilient material such as silicone rubber. The rollers 14, 15 and 18 and baffle 17 are mounted in a frame 23 which can be swung about a horizontal axis for lifting out of the bath. The molten metal is electrically heated by elements 21 and is thermostatically controlled.
