Abstract
A cleaned and heated metal strip (12) passes around a support and deflection roller (8) located in a hood (3) which contains an inert atmosphere above a bath of molten metal (2). Rotation of a roller (9), whose surface area lies more than half immersed in the molten metal (2), conveys molten metal to one side only of the strip (12) at the point at which the strip is supported by the roller (8). Adjustment of the size of the slit (10) between the two rollers (8,9) can determine precisely the thickness of the coating applied to the strip (12). The process can be used for galvanealing in which molten zinc is applied to and alloyed with one side of a steel strip. A particulate substance such as graphite balls can be floated on the surface of the molten zinc to reduce its evaporation and subsequent condensation on the inside of the hood. <IMAGE>
