The engagement of an automatically actuated clutch in a vehicle is controlled in dependence upon the engine exhaust pressure. In one embodiment an engine-suction servomotor (not shown) controls the clutch, and is connected through a line 7 to an engine induction connection 8 under the control of a valve 5, the servomotor being open to the atmosphere to engage the clutch when a throttle valve 4 is opened by engine exhaust pressure in a chamber 11 acting on a diaphragm 6. An adjustable spring 13 determines the pressure required to open this valve. A throttle may be interposed between chamber 11 and the engine exhaust system to slow the response. In a modification valve 4 is opened by a pendulum in response to acceleration of the vehicle, and the diaphragm 6 either limits the action of the pendulum, or supplements the action of the pendulum. In another modification the opening of the valve 4 is controlled by the inlet manifold suction in addition to the engine exhaust pressure. In further modifications the exhaust pressure acts on a diaphragm or piston successively shorting out series-connected resistors in the circuit of an electromagnetic clutch.
