Abstract
905,037. Hydraulic presses. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT Ltd. Jan. 9, 1961 [Jan. 7, 1960], No. 660/60. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] Contacting surfaces of a platen 21 and of a diaphragm backing ring 16, Fig. 1, in a sheetforming hydraulic press, such as described in Specification 871,251, are sealed by a resilient ring 2 intersecting the plane of contact of the two surfaces and subjected to fluid pressure, e.g. transmitted by diaphragms 10, and by a shield 4 of stiff but deflectable material, such as metal, which is arranged between the ring 2 and the contacting surfaces on the low-pressure side of the ring to prevent extrusion of the latter between these surfaces. The ring 2 has a substantially frusto-conical cross-section and engages in a corresponding groove in the stepped faces 20, 22 of the platen 21 when the latter is locked to the movable pressure chamber 8 of the press. The shield 4 is bonded to the ring 2 and has a flange 6 which is held between the backing ring 16 and the diaphragms 10. The latter are bonded at their periphery to rings 12 and form a closure to the chamber 8. When deformed by fluid pressure the diaphragms are prevented by the seal from extruding between the ring 16 and the platen 21.
