Abstract

904,833. Feeding sheets. WINKLER, R., and DUNNEBIER, K. March 30, 1960 [May 21, 1959], No. 11153/60. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group XVII] Sheets or blanks are fed, for example to envelope-making machines, by mechanism, wherein individual sheets or blanks from a sequence in overlapped formation are fed by a first conveyer to segment rollers which cooperate with counter-rollers to act as a stop, at their mutual contact point, for each blank and then to withdraw the blank from the overlapped formation and transfer it to a second, faster-running, conveyer. In one form, two segment rollers 16, 17 are mounted on a shaft 14, Fig. 1, in contact with two rollers 28, Figs. 4 and 5, which may be covered with resilient material. A crank arm 27 projects from the shaft 14 and is actuated in synchronism with the folding mechanism (to which the individual blanks are forwarded) through means, not shown, which cause the segment rollers 16 to rotate in the direction T so that, when the leading one of the blanks 6 of the sequence reaches the rollers, it is halted at the contact point between them, Fig. 4, and as a result of the feed movement of the belts 5 it arches up between that point and following rollers 7. The crank arm 27 is then actuated to rotate the rollers 16 in the direction U and the blank is gripped and accelerated between the rollers, which transfer it to a conveyer 33 which forwards it in the direction S to the folding machine. The spacing between the shafts 14, 15 of the rollers 16, 28 is adjustable by swinging the bearings 46 of the shafts 16 about pivots 20, Fig. 2. The rollers 16 are mounted on the shaft 14 so as to be movable along it and their spacing is adjusted so that they are somewhat further apart than the corner excisions at the leading edges of the blanks 6. The rollers 7, which press down the staggered blanks on their feeding belts 5, are rotatable in two carriages 8 which are pivotally mounted at the ends of arms 10 which extend from a cross-bar 13 on which they are longitudinally and transversely adjustable. Rollers 38, above the conveyer 33, are similarly mounted. In another form, Figs. 8 and 9, two similar segment rollers 53, 55 are concentrically mounted, there being two such pairs, laterally adjustable by an opposite-handed screwthread device. The rollers 53, 55 of each pair are rotated in opposite directions, through gearing. When the leading edge of a blank 6, travelling in the direction R, reaches the rollers the segment lobes are as shown in Fig. 8 and the blank is halted at the contact point between the rollers 55, 68. As the rollers continue to rotate in opposite directions they reach the Fig. 9 position, when all four segment lobes coincide, and the segments 55 release the blank and it is gripped between the segments 53 and the counter rollers 68 and thus forwarded to the conveyer 33.
