Abstract

857,769. Making envelopes. SMITHE MACHINE CO. Inc., F. L. May 23, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1958], No. 16699/58. Class 94(2). [Also in Group XVI] In a machine for making envelopes, the blanks 16 are fed on to a conveyer belt 120 in fannedout overlapping relationship with the marginal edges of the sealing flaps of the blanks offset a predetermined amount, and then passed through a gumming apparatus. The blanks are fed by pins 14 on conveyer chains 10 over a table 20, and are grasped by suckers associated with three rollers fixed on a continuously-rotating shaft 22 (see Group XVI). A sucker on the centre roller 28 grasps the centre of the forward edge of each blank, feeds it to a first position adjacent the belt 120 and then releases it. Just prior to such release, suckers associated with the two side rollers grasp the side edges of the blank towards the rear, and feed it forward a short distance at the speed of these rollers ; these suckers are then moved backwardly contrary to the direction of rotation of the rollers to retard the forward movement of the blank, and place the blank accurately on the belt 120 in fanned-out relation with the preceding blank. A mechanism D, including a pivoted arm 128 having a roller 130 urged by a spring towards the belt 120, assists in positioning and holding the blanks 16 on the belt. The belt 120 feeds the blanks between a solid belt conveyer E and a conveyer F comprising a pair of spaced belts, and gum is applied to the blanks by a roller 138 arranged between the spaced belts. The blanks are then fed to further belt conveyers H, I for further operations.
