904,619. Extrusion machines. PARKER, R. D., POUNDER, C. C., and REBBECK, Sir, F. E. June 20, 1961 [March 21, 1961], No. 10176/61. Class 87(2). An extrusion machine 11 has means for permitting axial, outward movement of the tapered extrusion nozzle 3 under excess pressure in the material to be extruded and for returning the nozzle when the pressure returns to normal. In an embodiment the nozzle 3 is divided by slots 5 forming tongues 6 each of which is connected by pivoted links 8 to the nozzle housing 10 fixed to the machine 11. A ram 1 reciprocates in a cylindrical nozzle extension 2 which is slidable in the machine 11. In operation, excess pressure causes the nozzle 3 to move outwardly against the action of a spring 13 thereby to deflect, the tongues 6 radially outward to relieve the excess pressure, the nozzle 3 being returned by the spring 13 when the pressure returns to normal. The spring 13 may be replaced by a fluid pressure device.
