900,158. Digesters. DORRIES A.G., O. Sept. 2, 1960, No.30425/60. Class 64 (1). An apparatus for intermittently feeding material, e.g. raw pulp, to a digester without releasing the pressure therewith comprises a feed cylinder 2 opening into one side of the digester 1 and an aligned second cylinder 3 opening into the opposite side. The feed cylinder has a filling aperture 5 connected by a pipe 6 to a feed worm 7. Two pistons 8, 9 are reciprocable within the cylinder 2 and are mounted, together with a counter-pressure piston 4 slidable in the cylinder 3 on a common piston-rod 10. In operation, material is fed by the worm 7 into the space between the pistons 8, 9. When the space is filled the pistons are moved to the right to the positions 8<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>1</SP>, the load on the reciprocating means being low since the digester pressure on the piston 9 is balanced by that on the piston 4. A spray of lye or other liquor from a pipe 11 dislodges the material so that it falls into the digester. In this position the filling aperture is closed by an extension 8<SP>11</SP> of the piston 8. After the material has been fed into the digester the pistons are returned to their original position.
