The pressure plate 2 of a compressing mechanism is moved towards and away from a support plate (not shown) by means of a scissor linkage 4, 5 operated by a piston and cylinder assembly 12, 13. The links 4, 5 are pivoted together at 6, and to the piston-rod 12 and cylinder 13 at 14, 15 respectively. The invention may be applied to machines for compressing particulate material or for baling paper sheets &c.
