A pipe 1 breakable at a location 2 intermediate the ends thereof is encircled by a sleeve 4, at that location, which encloses a flowable rubber or like material 5 maintained under pressure. When the pipe is broken at the annular notch 2 the rubber material forms, under the action of the said pressure, sealing plugs which close the broken ends of the pipes.
