Abstract

889,128. Stuffing-box substitutes. AVERY Ltd., W. & T. Jan. 16, 1961 [Nov. 6, 1959], No. 37669/59. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] An hydraulic system for controlling leakage in a ram 1 and cylinder 2 apparatus, such as a press or material testing machine, comprises at least two spaced annular channels 8, 9 in the sliding surfaces of the cylinder or the ram, and a packing ring 20 provided between the cylinder and ram, the channel 8 nearer the working chamber 3 of the cylinder being connected to a source of liquid 7 at substantially the same pressure as that supplied to the working chamber, and the second channel 9 being connected to a valve 13 which permits free exhaust of liquid from the channel at relatively low pressure and a constant rate of flow above a predetermined pressure. The leakage between the ram and cylinder is controlled at the relatively low pressure by the flow between the channels and at higher pressures, the packing is progressively brought into action by the pressure of - liquid between the second channel and the packing. The working chamber 3 is connected by a line 4, control valve 5, which may be of the type described in Specification 777,343, and a line 6 to a pump 7 which is also connected by a line 10 and pressure-reducing valve 11 to the first channel 8. The second channel is connected by a line 12 to the valve 13 which is also connected to the valve 5 and exhaust. The valve 13 has an adjustable orifice 14 and a plunger 15 on one side subjected to the pressure of a spring 16 and the pressure at the orifice and, on the other side, connected by a by-pass 18 to the pressure in the line 12. When the pressure in the working chamber 3 is low, the plunger is moved by the spring to a position wherein the flow from the channel 9 is unrestricted and leakage from the ram is controlled by the flow from the channel 8. As the pressure in the chamber 3 rises, the pressure in channel 9, and hence line 12 and by-pass 18, increases, causing the plunger 15 to move and pass a constant rate of flow so that the pressure in channel 9 builds up to bring the packing into operation.
