Abstract

904,457. Electrolytic potential measurements; two-part couplings. INGOLD, W. Jan. 26, 1959 [Jan. 25, 1958], No. 2770/59. Classes 37 and 38 (1). A half-cell for measuring electrolytic potentials has a coaxial cable lead - out, the connection between the braiding of the cable and the lead from the reference electrode being made by turning back the braiding of the cable upon itself and inserting the turned back end into the head of the cell where the brading is held in frictional contact with the electrode lead. As shown, the cell comprises a double-walled glass vessel 1 (Fig. 1) in which is located a reference electrode 9 having a platinum connection wire 7 and a pH sensitive glass membrane 10, the main outer wall being provided with a membrane 8 connecting with an indicating electrode 6. The letter is provided with a platinum lead 5 which passes through the inner wall at 4 and is fused in spiral form round the inner wall. A coaxial lead-out cable 11 (Fig. 3) has its braiding turned back at 13 and is inserted into the head of the cell so that the turned-back portion of the braiding is in electrical contact with the lead 5. The inner conductor is connected to the lead 7 by means of a silver wool or mercury mass 18. The cable is held in position by means of a flexible sheath 17 and a clamping ring 16. The lead 13 may be formed into or may otherwise comprise a ring fused to the inner wall of the cell. The arrangement permits the cable to be readily removed without unsoldering connections.
