Abstract

1,094,180. Electro-chemical analysis. HOESCH A. G. Oct. 10, 1966 [Oct. 14, 1965; June 25, 1966], No.45129/66. Heading G1N. The oxygen content of molten steel is estimated by a probe comprising a plug of solid electrolyte (e.g. ZrO 2 stabilized with CaO) and a comparison electrode e.g. platinum wire immersed in a gas of known oxygen content. The molten steel form the other electrode. In one construction Fig. 2 the plug of electrolyte 13 is held in a quartz tube 12, the end of a platinum wire 14 is twisted and inserted in a bore 23 in the electrolyte. Oxygen bearing gas is introduced by pipe 27. In modifications the electrolyte may be tapered, round, or oval section and spring loaded or cemented in the outer tube. Figs. 3, 5 (not shown); alternatively the quartz tube may be U-shaped with the electrolyte projecting from the bottom of the U, and one arm of the U connected to a reservoir of material which becomes gaseous at the measuring temperature and is located in the probe Fig. 6 (not shown); an electrical connection to the molten steel may be provided on the probe Fig. 7 (not shown).
