893,376. Cable terminations. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Oct. 25, 1960 [Oct. 26, 1959], No. 36197/59. Class 36. A stress cone termination suitable for use when testing oil-filled cables comprises a body 1 of vacuum-moulded epoxy resin with a smooth bore 3 and at its lower end a metal ring 5 and at its upper end an oil container 13 which may be transparent, the bore 3 flaring to a frusto-conical area 8. Connected to the metal ring 5 is an electrode 10 having a continuously-increasing diameter as it extends along the body 1 and turns back at a flared groove 11. Fins 7 may be moulded integrally if required. In use, a cable core 23 is stripped down to the insulation 24 and the conductor 27 and insulation 24 inserted in the termination until level with the top of the conical wall 8, the space between the insulation 24 and the bore 3 being filled by building up the insulation with impregnated paper 22. The metallic screen 25 is connected to the ring 5 by a wrapping of lead wire 26 or by spraying a conducting coating. The electrode 10 is preferably formed by spraying or otherwise depositing a conducting material on the surface of the body 1, but may be formed before the moulding is complete, and in that case may alternatively be of metal foil or mesh, the moulding then being completed around the electrode. In order to make a connection to the conductor 27 a connector 16 is inserted in the aperture at the top of the body 1. The connector 16 comprises a finned tube 18 of resin surrounding a copper tube 17 in which is inserted a pin 28 which pierces the conductor 27. A terminal pin is inserted in the top of the connector 16 and the container 13 filled with oil.
