Sewing.-A tufting needle, for threading a mattress tuft assembly comprising two heads 7, 7<1> and a connecting member 8 through a mattress 2, has a slot for accommodating and a spring-loaded rod for locating or retaining the tuft head in position on the needle during the threading operation, the slot being so constructed that the spring-loaded rod is displaced so as to release the head when the tuft assembly has been passed through the mattress. The head 7 is inserted through a slot 6 in the side of the pointed tubular needle 1, is pressed down by a spring-loaded plunger 5, and is retained in the slot by a lip 9. As the needle approaches the end of its travel through the mattress the tuft head 7<1> at the other end of the member 8 engages the mattress surface and the rod 5 is moved back against its spring to release the head 5 from the slot. Sewing-machines.-A plurality of the needles may be mounted in a frame actuated by mechanical or hydraulic means so that the whole or part of a mattress may be tufted in one operation.
