Abstract
901,865. Dual-fuel engines; combustion chambers. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. March 23, 1961 [April 1, 1960], No. 10716/61. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) An engine having a compression ratio which is very low for a diesel engine and very high for an otto-cycle engine comprises fuel injection means, a petrol or diesel fuel supply system, timed spark ignition means and means producing whirling of the air in the combustion chamber about an axis extending longitudinally of the cylinder. Petrol or diesel fuel is supplied from a tank 20 or 21 through a changeover valve 22 and a fuel injection pump 23 to an injector nozzle 13 from which fuel jets 20, Fig. 2, are directed radially into the combustion chamber 12. The air admission passage has spiral walls 17 to impart a whirling motion to the air to deflect the fuel jets 20 into a peripehral direction to prevent them impinging on the cylinder or combustion chamber walls. In a modification, air whirling is effected by means of a shrouded valve. The combustion chamber may be hemispherical or cylindrical.
