In a gas-cooled graphite moderated nuclear reactor, the coolant passage 2 is extended, by tube 4, through the support plate 6. Lateral relative movement between the moderator 1 and 6 is permitted by the ball bearings 7. Leakage of the coolant gas through the plate 6 and bearings 7, into the core, is prevented by the stainless steel hose 12 welded at 11, 13.
