A measuring piston 22 is reciprocated in a cylinder 23 to deliver a predetermined quantity of sausage filling by a crank device driven at a substantially constant speed assisted by an hydraulic driving piston in cylinder device. Operation commences when valve 1 is moved by an elbow lever 2 to full-line position, Fig. 1, where lever 2 is held against spring 3 by a locking pin 59, valve 10 being in the position shown. Oil, drawn in by pump 4, passes through ducts 9 and 11 and pipe 12 into chamber 13 beneath a piston 15 which is connected by a rod 21 to a piston 22. Oil also passes from duct 9 through duct 16 and pipe 17 to the space 18 above piston 15 and to an hydraulic motor 20 of infinitely variable torque. The relative sizes of the surfaces of piston 15 in spaces 13 and 18 are such that under the action of the oil pressure piston 22 tends to rise. An extension 24 of rod 21 is connected by a pin 25 and link 26 to a crank-pin 27 rotating with a crankwheel 28 driven by motor 20. As piston 22 rises, it displaces sausage meat through a duet 32 in a member 31 and a twisting nozzle 33 into a sausage casing carried on a filling tube 34. when piston 22 is in its upper position member 31 is turned through 180 degrees so that duct 32 connects cylinder 23 to delivery cylinder 36. At the same time slide valve 10 is displaced downwardly by a cam 39 rotating with crank-wheel 28 and oil from duct 9 passes to the cylinder space 18 and to motor 20. Piston 22 is moved downwards and oil displaced from space 13 passes through pipes and ducts 12, 11, 40, 41, 42 to a cylinder space 43 to push piston 45 upwards. Connected to piston 45 by a rod 46 is a piston 47 in delivery cylinder 36 which, as it rises, pushes sausage meat through duct 35 and passage 32 into cylinder 23. During this movement, oil above piston 45 is returned to reservoir 6. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), motor 20 is replaced by a piston in cylinder arrangement.
