Abstract

901,385. Laminates; knitting; floor coverings. TEXAMA Ltd. April 4, 1960, No. 11810/60. Classes 74 (2) and 140. A floor covering comprises a surface ply of knitted fabric in which the pile is raised, said fabric having a backing comprising pile yarns which are laid in without being knitted, and a durable resilient base layer integrally combined with the knitted layer. The backing of the knitted fabric may be cotton, nylon, or acrylic fibre, and the pile yarns may comprise mohair or synthetic fibres, e.g. a fibre blend of nylon and rayon. Foamed plastics and elastomers such as sponge or foam rubber are preferably employed for the base layer, but plastics and elastomers such as natural or synthetic rubber in unaerated form, and polyvinyl chloride may be used. The foam rubber backing may be applied directly to the back of the fabric and spread by means of a doctor blade. The sponge rubber base layer in sheet form may be applied to the underside of the backing by vulcanized rubber cement. The Figure shows how the pile yarns A are incorporated in the loops of the backing threads B in the knitting process.
