Abstract

The pour point of middle-distillate fuels boiling in the range 250 DEG -750 DEG F. is lowered by the addition of up to 1% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene containing 1-40% by weight of total monomers of an olefinically unsaturated aliphatic non-hydrocarbon monomer containing 3-5 carbon atoms, e.g. vinyl propionate, methyl methacrylate, allyl ethyl ether, divinyl ether, acrylonitrile, vinylacetonitrile, or, preferably, vinyl acetate, the copolmer having a molecular weight of 700-3,000 (Rast method). The fuel may be a heating oil, gas oil, diesel oil, or jet fuel, which latter is preferably a mixture of kerosene, boiling in the range 200 DEG -650 DEG F. (90-60%) and naphtha (10-40%), boiling range 140 DEG -220 DEG F., 220 DEG -320 DEG F. or 310 DEG -390 DEG F.
