Abstract

Polymer compositions which may be added to middle distillate fuel oils to depress the pour point and enhance filterability comprise 90 to 10 weight per cent of an oil-soluble copolymer of ethylene and a vinyl ester of a fatty acid, said ester containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms and said copolymer containing 15 to 30 weight per cent of said ester, and 10 to 90 weight per cent of a polylauryl acrylate or polylauryl methacrylate of molecular weight 760 to 10,000. Preferred esters are those containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms, particularly vinyl acetate.ALSO:Fuel compositions comprise a middle distillate fuel boiling in the range 300 DEG to 750 DEG F., a minor proportion by weight sufficient to lower the pour point of said fuel of a copolymer of ethylene and a vinyl ester of a fatty acid, said ester containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule and constituting 15 to 30 weight per cent of said copolymer, and a minor proportion by weight sufficient to enhance the filterability of said fuel of a polymer of lauryl acrylate or methacrylate having a molecular weight of 760 to 10,000. Specified fuels are jet fuels, kerosenes, heating oils and diesel fuels, which may contain conventional rust inhibitors, anti-emulsifying agents, corrosion inhibitors, anti-oxidants, dispersants, dyes, haze-inhibitors and antistatic agents. Examples describe compositions of diesel and heating oils containing ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers and polylauryl acrylate or methacrylate.
