Abstract

Iron oxide for use as a pigment is prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate with an alkali to form a suspension of ferrous hydroxide, oxidizing the hydroxide bubbling air into a suspension of the hydroxide in aqueous iron sulphate solution to form ferric oxide seeds, contacting the seeds with metallic iron in the presence of an aqueous solution of a sulphate of iron and oxygen to form a colloidal iron oxide gel and, either before oxidizing the suspension or before contacting the seeds with metallic iron, centrifuging to remove solid contaminants and oversized seeds. The alkali may be calcium hydroxide. Yellow seeds are obtained by oxidizing the hydroxide in ferrous sulphate solution, and red seeds by oxidizing the hydroxide in ferric sulphate solution. An example is given.
