Abstract

899,255. Gas turbine plant. MIKULA, I. Dec. 19, 1958 [Dec. 21, 1957], No. 41065/58. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XIII] In a gas turbine plant operating on an open cycle wherein heat is introduced into the cycle at a point downstream of the turbine, the heating of the driving medium to the admission temperature of the turbine is effected by a high temperature recuperation heater which comprises at least a first heat-exchange section for the combustion products containing the combustion chamber or coupled with the combustion chamber and arranged downstream of the turbine and at least a second heat-exchange section for the driving medium introduced upstream of the turbine, the first and second heat exchange sections being coupled together by means of a closed heat carrying circuit for a suitable liquid or molten salt circulated by a pump. Air after compression by a compressor 6 is heated before admission to the turbine 5 by means of a high temperature recuperation heater consisting of a heat-exchange section 1 heated by combustion products from a combustion chamber fed with combustion air by the turbine 5 and a heat-exchange section 2 which heats the air. The combustion chamber may consist of the actual combustion chamber and a turbulent cooling chamber. The exhaust from the section 1 may be used to dry fuel or introduced into the combustion chamber of a steam generator. The heat is transferred from the heat exchange section 1 to the heat exchange section 2 by means of a suitable liquid metal or molten salt circulated in the circuit 3 by a pump 4. Suitable metals are sodium or eutectic 56% sodium and the remainder potassium. The combustion products from industrial furnaces or a steam generator may be used to heat the heat exchange section 1. The tubes of this section may be made of aluminium-iron alloy. The active part of the heat-exchange section 2 may be enclosed in a pressure vessel so that it is not exposed to pressure stresses. A compensation chamber may be built into the circuit 3 which chamber acts as a storage container and a melting chamber which may be heated by an independent liquid fuel burner on starting. The recuperation heater may be used for reheating the working medium between the individual expansion stages of the turbine or between groups of stages or between individual turbines connected in series. Specifications 578,686, 724,176, 732,778, 733,476 and 733,483 are referred to.
