Abstract

19,920. Fullagar, H. F. Oct. 5. Turbines.-Air is heated to a high temperature by burning fuel in it, and is admitted at a comparatively low pressure to a turbine and finally passes through a regenerator. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus adapted to use solid fuel in a furnace j. The air is supplied by a pump a heated in the regenerator c, which may, if desired, be of the tubular form and then passes through the furnace and turbine b. When gas is used, it also may be heated in a regenerator, and heat from other sources, as metallurgical furnaces, may be used for heating the motor fluid. Liquid fuel supplied by a sprayer may be used. The turbine wheel may be cooled by passing steam or air through it by the passages 2, 3, or the vanes may be made hollow and crescent-shaped in section, and a cooling fluid may be passed through them as shown in Fig. 14. The casing is lined with refractory material u.
