Abstract
347,206. Propelling by fluid jet reaction. WHITTLE, F., Hill Crest, Dorrington, Lincoln. Jan. 16, 1930, No. 1521. [Class 79 (iii).] In a propelling apparatus of the type in which air is taken in, compressed, heated, and expelled with high velocity or re-expansion to provide a propulsive thrust, the compressor is driven by a turbine, the pressure drop or expansion taking place in two stages, the first through the nozzles of the turbine and the second through the propelling nozzles. A turbo-compressor 3, Fig. 2, draws air through passages 2 and delivers it through diffusers 8 and a collector rign 9 into a heating chamber 10 in which heavy oil or other fuel is burned. Chambers 10 are lagged and may be lined with refractory material. The heated gases pass into a collector 12 expanding through a multi-stage turbine 13 secured directly, or geared, to the driving spindle of the compressor. From the turbine the gases expand through nozzles 17 to the atmosphere. A diagram illustrating the thermal cycle of the apparatus is included in the Specification. The controlling means may include fuel control, gas flow control, or mechanical control of the rotor shaft. Directional control of the gas jets may be incorporated. According to modifications described in the Provisional Specification a portion only of the heated air may expand through the turbine the remainder expanding directly to the atmosphere. Alternatively the turbine may be omitted and the compressor driven by a steam engine having its boiler water heated by the outgoing gases from the combustion chambers.
