Abstract

899,183. Moulding powdered materials. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 10, 1960 [May 22, 1959], No.17559/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups II and XI] An article is produced by hot pressing, by means of a graphite ram 1 through a transverse graphite plate 6, metallic and/or ceramic powder 5 in a graphite die 3 having a cavity bounded at one end by a further transverse graphite plate 4 the thickness of which is less than the thickness of the side walls of the die and adjacent which is located an induction heating coil 10. The die is surrounded by refractory bricks 7 which are maintained in position by a spring-tensioned steel band 8, and a layer 11 of electrical insulation as provided between the coil 10 and the plate 4. A second coil may be positioned adjacent plate 6 and the die may be of metal, ceramic, or material having a graphite base. The powder may be pressed by a pair of rams acting in opposite directions in a protective atmosphere if necessary, and resistance instead of induction heating may be employed.
