Abstract
1,173,595. Casting composite articles. HOTFOIL Ltd. 9 Feb., 1967 [10 Nov., 1965], No. 47601/65. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions D1 and H5] In producing an electrical heating unit having apertures therethrough of the type comprising a cast metal block incorporating an electrical heating element, the heating element 11 of, for example, a heated flange ring for a pipe system, is precisely located on a wiremesh grid 10 by clips 12, the grid 10 is tensioned and metal, e.g. aluminium or aluminium alloy, is cast around the grid and element. The precise positioning of the element in the grid enables the apertures to be drilled without damaging the element. Alternatively, a half of the metal block is made, the grid 10 and element 11 are secured to the half-block and the remainder of the metal block is cast around the grid and element. The heating element may be mineral-insulated stainless steel sheathed cable and the terminal ends consist of finned glands and mild steel pins insulated therefrom with ceramic beads. The finned glands may be located in a steel block to protect them during casting. The heating unit may be used as a platten in a heated press, e.g. for pressing trousers. The heating unit may also be used to cure plastics laminate material of irregular shape by the use of an intermediate correspongingly irregularly shaped heat transfer block.
