Abstract

1,177,623. Powder metallurgy. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 20, 1967 [Jan.21, 1966], No.2885/66. Heading C7D. In a process of making a sintered metal compact e.g. Ni-Fe, the metal powder is pre-sintered in a reducing atmosphere in a die having a smooth base inner surface of silica or a borosilicate glass and the compact is then fully sintered. As shown in Fig. 2, a mixture of Ni-Fe powder of 5 micron size is placed in a die comprising side members 10 with flanges 11 and an outer base-plate 13 screwed to flanges 11. The base-plate 13 supports an asbestos sheet 15 and a plate 16 of borosilicate glass on silica and the powder rests on this plate. The die size is such as to produce a sintered compact 2 feet x 9 inches x 1 inch. Pre-sintering is effected at 500‹ C. in hydrogen. The compact is then transferred to a furnace and fully sintered in hydrogen. Cold rolling is then carried out on the sintered compact.
