Abstract
898,708. Controlling toothed gearing. VONO Ltd. Sept. 23, 1959 [Oct. 21, 1958], No. 33506/58. Class 80 (1) and 80 (2). Epicyclic gearing comprising a driving carrier 10, Fig. 2, carrying one or more pairs of stepped planets 42, 43 engaging a reaction stun 20 and a driven sun 17 is used as a disconnectible drive between coaxial shafts 13, 14, the reaction sun 20 being held stationary to connect the drive by means of a locking device which is automatically released, to disconnect the drive, after a predetermined rotation (e.g. one turn) of the driven shaft 14. As shown the planet carrier 10 is keyed to the shaft 13 and has peripheral teeth engaged by a driving pinion 11. The sun gear 17 has an integral sleeve 18 keyed to the shaft 14 and is also supported by a bearing 16 on the shaft 13. The sun gear 20 has an integral sleeve 21 which is rotatable on the sleeve 18 and which has a number of radial slots 22, Fig. 1, engageable by a cranked locking arm 23 having a slotted-pivot connection 24 with a fixed arm 25. The arm 25 is held by a fixed bracket 28. A spring 31 urges the arm 23 towards the slots 22 but engagement is normally prevented by a fixed shoulder 34 abutting a recess in the arm 23. The arm 23 is tilted to release it from the shoulder 34 by means such as a manually or solenoid operated plunger 35, whereupon the arm 23 is moved to engage a slot 22 and thereby establish a drive between the shafts 13, 14. In order to disconnect the drive automatically after one turn the shaft 14 has keyed thereon a collar 39, Fig. 2, having a spring-loaded lost motion connection (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) with a sleeve 36 loose on the shaft 14, the sleeve 36 having a cam nose 37 which as it rotates contacts the nose of the locking arm 23 to disengage it from the slot 22 and re-engage it with the shoulder 34. The lost motion connection ensures that the shaft 14 undergoes a full 360-degree rotation before the drive is disconnected. Further cam projections may be provided to disconnect the drive after less than a full turn of the shaft 14. It is stated that the arm 23 may be automatically operated periodically to effect intermittent rotation of the shaft 14-e.g. for indexing a work-table. Specification 859,163 is referred to.
