Abstract

168,075. White, A. E., (Harris Manufacturing Co., A. W.). Feb. 16, 1920. Controlling clutches.-In means for intermittently rotating a driven shaft from a continuously rotating driving-shaft, toothed gearing is connected and disconnected at predetermined intervals by one or more clutches operated by mechanism rotating with these shafts. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, a gear 5 secured to the driving-shaft 2 meshes with a gear 7 loose on the driven shaft 8 and normally locked thereto by a sliding bolt 10 adapted to engage one of a number of holes 10<1> in the gear. A spring 19 acts through a circumferentially.set lever 17 and a bell-crank lever 12 to keep the bolt 10 in engagement. At certain times. a cam 6 carried by the shaft 2 engages a snug 20 upon the lever 17 so as to disengage the bolt 10 from the gear 7 and bring it into engagement with a fixed arm 21, thereby stopping the shaft 2. The gears 5, 7 revolve loosely until the cam 6 clears the snug 20, when the drive is again picked up. In order that the parts 6, 20 may engage again when the shaft 8 has made one revolution, the cam 6 should be equal in length to the difference in the rims of the wheels 5, 7. With other proportions, the shaft 8 may make more than one complete revolution at a time. The cam shaft may be arranged to have epicyclic motion. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Speciftcations 15284/95, 458/13, and 5278/13.
