Abstract
998,248. Gearing for starting and stopping machinery. K. ZUSE. Jan. 31, 1962 [Feb. 2, 1961; Feb. 3, 1961; Sept. 20,1961], No. 3771/62. Heading F2L. A transmission for accelerating a driven shaft up to a desired speed, rotating it at that speed and subsequently decelerating the shaft, comprises a Geneva mechanism engageable to accelerate and decelerate the shaft and a gear and clutch arrangement for driving the driven shaft at the desired speed. A driving shaft I carries a disc 3 having coupling bolts 5 mounted thereon which are axially slidable to engage rollers 6 in slots 23 of a Geneva wheel 22. Each coupling bolt 5 is fast with a control means 8 having cams 8a, 8b which at one position around the periphery of the driving disc 3 co-operate with a roller 10 carried by a bell-crank lever 9. Energization of a solenoid 12 pivots lever 9 so that the roller 10 engages the cam 86 and retracts the bolt 5 so that the roller 6 will not engage a slot 23 of the Geneva wheel. Deenergization of the solenoid permits a spring 13 to shift lever 9 so that roller 10 engages the cam 8a and the roller engages a slot 23 to drive the Geneva wheel. When the Geneva wheel is at its maximum speed the bolt 5 is withdrawn by the action of a second solenoidcontrolled bell-crank lever 16, and the drive is now taken over by way of gears 20, 21, and a clutch arrangement. The gear 21 is freely mounted and is clutched to the Geneva wheel 22 by way of a roller 29 engaging a depression of a cam 35 fast with the wheel 21, the roller 29 being rotatably mounted on a cranked lever 26 which also carries a roller 27 engageable with depressions in a stationary cam 34. The lever 26 is pivotally mounted on the Geneva wheel 22 and has an arm 30 engageable with a spring-pressed roller 31 to form an over-centre arrangement, the arrangement being such that initially with the driven shaft at rest the roller 27 engages a depression in cam 34 to station the driven shaft, upon roller 6 engaging a slot of the Geneva wheel roller 27 rides up a lobe of the cam 34 until when the Geneva mechanism has attained its maximum speed the lever 26 moves over-centre and the roller 29 engages a depression of the cam 35 to clutch the gearwheel 21 to the Geneva mechanism 22. To decelerate the driven shaft a roller 6 is projected into a slot 23 by the bell-crank lever mechanism 16 so that the Geneva wheel is decelerated as the roller proceeds radially outwardly of the slot, the roller 29 riding out of the cam depression until the lever 26 moves over centre at the time when the driven shaft becomes stationary so that the roller 27 engages a depression of the cam 34 to hold the driven shaft stationary.
