Abstract

602,705. Intermittent drive mechanism ; clutches. KING, Ltd., G. W., KING, D. M., and CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Nov. 9, 1945, No. 30027. [Class 80 (ii)] Mechanism for obtaining an intermittent drive, particularly for the operation of the transfer mechanism in the loading and unloading of conveyer systems, comprises a clutch device between a driving shaft 10 and a driven shaft 24 which is put into and out of operation by a cam 22 driven at a reduced. speed from the driving shaft 10 through an epicyclic gear train. The clutch comprises an arm 23 on the shaft 10 which is adapted to engage a rocker arm 26 pivoted on a bracket 25 secured to the shaft 24. The arm 26 is maintained in engagement against the action of a spring 30 by a fixed cam plate 33 except at one point in each revolution where a roller 27 on the arm 26 can move into a recess 32, when the drive is disconnected. The cam 22 is secured to a planet carrier 15 of an epicyclic train 11, 12, 16, 17, the latter wheel constituting a fixed reaction member, and is shaped so as to engage and move the roller 27 out of the recess 32 and the arm 26 into the path of the driving arm 23 once on each revolution of the carrier 15. A drive for a single revolution is then imparted to the driven shaft 24 when the roller 27 of the arm 26 will be moved into the recess 32 by the spring 30 to disconnect the drive until the next actuation by the cam 22. The movement of the roller 27 into the recess 32 may be effected positively by a fixed cam (not shown).
