Abstract

599,264. Clutches. TAILBY, B. March 23, 1945, No. 7461. [Class 80(ii)] A clutch applicable to radio tuning condenser drives comprises a driving member having two parts relatively rotatable about the main clutch axis under driving torque variations to effect radial clutch engaging or disengaging movement of clutching means mounted on one of the parts. As shown, initial application of driving torque causes clutch engagement by such relative rotation against a spring whose restoring action disengages the clutch upon cessation of the torque. Rigidly mounted on an input shaft 3 are a triangular cam 5 and a circular plate 4 having between them a freely mounted gear 1 whose rotation relative to the shaft is controlled by a spring 15 having arms 15a bearing on pins 16, 17 in the gear 1 and plate 4 respectively. In the absence of driving torque the gear 1 is held so that a pin 14 thereon is midway between the ends of an arcuate slot or cut-away 4a in the plate 4, in which position triangular operating plates 6 carrying driving pins 9 and mounted to slide radially in slots in the gear 1 are held in contact with the rounded corners of the cam 5 by a garter spring 10, the pins 9 being then clear of co-acting slots 11 in a driven member 12. Application of driving torque in either direction causes the plate 14 to move against the action of the spring 15 relatively to the gear 1, which is associated with retarding means (not shown), until the pin 14 engages one end of the cut-away 4a to drive the gear wheel 1 positively, in which position the cam 5 presents its sides to the plates 6 allowing the pins 9 to engage. Upon cessation of the driving torque the spring 15 acts to restore the parts to the disengaged position. A separate drive may be taken from the gear 1, which may also be replaced by a disc either braked or forming part of a train of friction gearing. The driving pins 9 may be replaced by sliding cams operating axially moving driving pins.
