Abstract

643,863. Screw-and-nut actuators. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 10, 1947, No. 15300. Convention date, July 1, 1946. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The reciprocatable member 24 in a screw-and-nut actuator carries a pair of abutment members 140, 142 which operate limit switches 20, 22, each member comprising a collar eccentrically encircling said reciprocatable member and movable thereon. The members 140, 142 are rotatably mounted on sleeves 130 and held thereon by fixed shoulders 134 and removable locking rings 136, spring-washers 148 serving to frictionally hold said abutment members from rotation. Adjustment of the amount of movement member 24 can make before switches 20 or 22 are actuated to de-energize motor 44, is effected by first moving the sleeves and abutment members axially along member 24 to give a rough adjustment, and then rotating the abutment members to adjust the height of their switch-engaging portions. Belleville springs 152 located in cups 150 serve to cushion the impact between the sleeves 130 and the casing should the actuator over-run. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), Belleville springs are secured to the sleeves 130 and contact the external faces of abutment cups on over-run. The screw 62 is driven by a reduction gear train 16 through a pinion 66 on a shaft 68 to which shaft is splined a clutch disc 30 which, when the motor and solenoid 94 are de-energized, abuts against a non-rotatable brake ring 75. This ring locks the mechanism by being forced into engagement with the clutch-plate 30 by springs 76 which over-power a spring 74 tending to engage the clutch-plate with a driven plate 28. Upon simultaneous energization of the motor and solenoid the armature 96, together with the brake ring 75, is withdrawn to the right and the spring 74 urges the plates 28, 30 into contact so effecting the transmission of the motor drive to the screw 62.
