Abstract
897,331. Propellent powders. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. April 8, 1960, No. 12566/60. Class 9(2). A smokeless powder is obtained by adding to the suspension obtained by dispersing nitrocellulose dissolved in a volatile solvent in a vehicle which is a non-solvent for nitrocellulose and substantially immiscible with the volatile solvent, a pulverulent insoluble modifier which has initially been wetted with a volatile solvent for nitrocellulose, and subsequently removing the volatile solvent to yield hardened powder grains. The modifier may be carbon black, cyclomethylene-trinitramine, aluminium dust, calcium carbonate, powdered iron, iron oxide, red lead, lead chromate or lead sulphide. Water is the preferred non-solvent and ethyl acetate or methyl ethyl ketone may be used as the volatile solvent. A protective colloid such as dextrin, starch, gum arabic or animal protein may be added to the vehicle after the wet modifier has been incorporated, and sodium sulphate dinitrotoluene, ethyl centralite, nitroglycerine, diphenylamine and dibutyl phthalate may also be added.
