Abstract

1,156,873. Propellants. HERCULES Inc. 9 June, 1967 [9 June, 1966], No. 26868/67. Heading C1D. A heat -resistant non-corrosive propellent composition comprises 10-30% by weight of a cross-linked polyacrylic rubber binder and 70-90% by weight of particulate HMX and/or RDX. The binder is prepared from about 97% ethyl acrylate and about 3% N-methylol acrylamide combined with acrylamide or methacryl - amide. In preparing the composition, methyl ethyl ketone, ether, acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl acetate or tetrahydrofuran is used as a volatile solvent desensitizing agent. Salicylic acid, phthalic anhydride, or benzoic acid may be present as a cross-linking rate accelerator, and oxamide or ammonium oxalate as a coolant; aluminium, boron, lead, or carbon black may also be included. The propellant may be in the form of small perforated grains or compressed to form large grains and may be coated.
