[Also in Group XXXIV] A mechanical, e.g. an eccentric, press having an infinitely variable working speed is characterized by the provision of an automatically operating brake which responds to the working speed and is provided between the clutch and gear. A centrifugal brake 1, comprising conical segments 6 carrying brake linings 6<SP>1</SP> bearing against brake drum 7, is located between clutch 2 and gear 3 on a shaft 4<SP>1</SP> which also carries a flywheel 5. As the rotation of shaft 4<SP>1</SP> increases pivoted weights 8 cause segments 6 to pivot about 6<SP>11</SP> and the linings are applied to the drum 7 against the action of springs 8<SP>111</SP>. The braking action may be adjusted by lateral movement of the inner brake unit comprising weights 8 and segments 6. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the brake comprises a centrifugal governor and a sliding linkage on the drive shaft. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, the brake between the clutch 104 and the gear 107 is constructed as a flywheel 105 engaged on its periphery by a brake lining 106 which on operation of lever 111 becomes inoperative by way of a linkage 110 connected to the clutch. The flywheel 105 may be engaged or disengaged with the drive shaft 102, 102<SP>1</SP> by having pins which may be operated by compressed air or mechanically to engage hub 105<SP>1</SP>.
