Abstract

895,742. Purifying waste liquids. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM ROESSLER. May 16, 1958 [May 25, 1957; July 17, 1957], No. 11409/60. Divided out of 895,740. Classes 46 and 111. An apparatus for continuously detoxicating waste liquors which contain soluble cyanides or free hydrocyanic acid by means of elementary chlorine or alkali or alkaline earth metal hypochlorites comprises a first vessel provided with an inlet and outlet for the liquor to be detoxicated, a device for the continuous potentiometric measurement of the content of cyanide ions in the liquor passing through the vessel, a controlled-feed device for gaseous chlorine or aqueous hypochlorite solution, and, if the waste liquors are not alkaline, a solution of an alkali, which device is actuated by the power impulse generated in the potentiometric measuring device so as to increase the supply of chlorine or hypochlorite when the cyanide content of the water rises and correspondingly reduce the supply thereof when the cyanide content decreases, and, connected to the outlet from the first vessel, a second vessel which is preferably longer than the first vessel and which is provided with an outlet. In a preferred embodiment the liquor enters a first vessel 2 which is so constructed by means of partitions that the liquor flows uniformly through. A measuring electrode 4 is connected to a switch 6 which regulates the opening of a valve 7 for the supply of chlorine 8 in calculated amounts. The detoxicated liquor enters a second larger vessel 9 which is provided with a measuring electrode 11, indicator 12 and a switch 13, connected to the measuring device, which closes a valve 14 when the indicator shows that there are cyanide ions in the liquor leaving the vessel 9, and simultaneously operates an acoustic or optical warning instrument 15. Specification 895,741 also is referred to.
