Abstract

895,741. Purifying waste liquors. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM ROESSLER. May 16, 1958 [May 25, 1947; July 17, 1957], No. 11408/60. Divided out of 895,740. Classes 46 and 111. A process for continuously detoxicating waste liquors containing soluble cyanides or free hydrocyanic acid comprises passing the waste liquor through a 2-zone container, which zones are connected by an overflow in which is arranged a potentiometric device for continuously measuring CN-ion concentration, continuously adding to the first zone, by way of a controlled feed device actuated by the measuring device, sufficient chlorine or an alkali or alkaline earth metal hypochlorite solution to convert the cyanides or hydrocyanic acid to cyanates, and continuously adding to the second zone, by way of a second controlled feed device also actuated by the measuring device, sufficient chlorine or hypochlorite solution to convert the cyanate to nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The chlorine or hypochlorite may only be supplied to the second zone when the measurement of the cyanide ion concentration in the overflow exceeds a previously established maximum value. In a preferred apparatus the cyanide-containing liquid enters a first zone (A, a) and is treated with a controlled dose of chlorine or hypochlorite from a storage vessel D by means of a regulating device E, the quantity being determined by means of a measuring device C which is located inthe over flow between zones (A, a) and A, b). A calculated quantity of chlorine or hypochlorite may also be added to zone (A, b). Oxidation may be completed in vessel B which is fitted with deflecting plates F or agitators. Feeds may also be controlled by a double piston measuring pump. Specification 759,109 also is referred to.
