Abstract

1398887 Separating gases PENNWALT CORP 8 Sept 1972 [8 Sept 1971] 41877/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for removing gaseous impurities from air includes a housing, a fan 5 for drawing air indicated by arrow 1 containing gaseous impurities through an inlet into the housing and for exhausting cleansed air substantially free of gaseous impurities through an outlet thereof, a sprayer 2 for scrubbing the air passing through the housing with a liquid 3, a pump 4 for pumping the liquid from a container to sprayer 2, a pump 10 for introducing a chemical reagent for reacting with the gaseous impurities into the liquid in the container, a sensor 8 in the housing for sensing the level of concentration of the chemical reagent in the exhausting air; and a regulator 9 for varying the introduction of chemical reagent into the liquid in response to the level of concentration of the chemical reagent in the exhausting air monitored by the sensor 8. The apparatus may be for use with an oxidizing agent as the chemical reagent and the sensor 8 is adapted to determine the concentration of oxidizing agent in the exhausted air. The apparatus may include means for detecting gaseous impurities adjacent the inlet of the housing, the detection means being arranged to actuate the fan 5. The chemical reagent may be ozone, chlorine or chlorine dioxide when purifying kitchen air, sodium hydroxide or milk of lime when eliminating sulphur dioxide or hydrogen fluoride, or thiosulphate solution for the elimination of halogen, e.g. fluorine or chlorine dioxide.
