Abstract

Textiles composed wholly or partly of natural or regenerated cellulose are finished by treating them with aminoplast resins and fixing on the textile in addition to the aminoplast an acid of the general formula <FORM:0895099/IV (c)/1> or <FORM:0895099/IV (c)/2> in which R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and R2 is an aliphatic or aromatic residue, any remaining free carboxylic groups being finally neutralised with alkali. Specified acids are N-methylol oxamic acid, N-methylol succinamic acid, N-methylol phthalamic acid, N-methylol hydroxy-succinamic acid and N-methylol maleamic acid. The acid may be applied to the textile, e.g. a cotton fabric, with the resin precondensate, e.g. cyclic ethylene urea-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resin precondensates, and fixed at the same time as the resin precondensate or the acid may be applied before or after the resin precondensate. The N-methylol derivatives of the monoamides of dicarboxylic acids may be added to the resin precondensate as such or the dicarboxylic acid monoamide may be added to the resin precondensate solution and reaction with formaldehyde to form the N-methylol derivative effected either in the solution or on the textile after impregnation.
