Abstract

In the finishing of textiles composed partly or wholly of natural or regenerated cellulose by the fixation on the textile of an initially water-soluble aminoplast resin precondensate to improve dimensional stability, recovery from creasing, fastness of fugitive dyestuffs and durability to washing of mechanical effects, e.g. glazing, embossing, beetling, scheinering and pleating, chemical degradation of the textiles, which occurs when they are washed in solutions of chlorinecontaining bleaching agents, is reduced by the additional fixation on the textile of a polymer containing carboxyl groups which may be wholly or partly in the form of an alkali-metal salt, this additional fixation being effected by crosslinking in situ an initially water-soluble organic polymer containing carboxyl groups and/or carboxyl groups neutralised with alkalis, and if desired other groups serving as reactive positions for cross-linking, the final cross-linked polymer containing carboxyl groups in the form of alkali metal salts or free carboxyl groups which are finally converted to the corresponding alkalimetal salts by neutralising with alkali. The polymer containing carboxyl groups may be applied to the textile before, after or simultaneously with the aminoplast. Suitable polymers containing carboxyl groups are polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids and copolymers of acrylic methacrylic, maleic and fumaric acids and maleic anhydride with vinyl alcohol or acrylamide. Polymers containing vinyl alcohol residues may be cross-linked by reaction with aldehydes, reaction products of formaldehyde and amides (which may be the starting material for the production of the aminoplast resin), carboxylic groups or organic di-isocyanates, and polymers containing carboxylic groups may be crosslinked by ester formation when treated with polyhydric alcohols, e.g. polyethylene glycol. Cross linking may be effected by heating the textile impregnated with the reactants and if desired a catalyst to an elevated temperature. Specification 732,851 is referred to.
