Abstract
894,986. Digital electric calculating-apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 1, 1960 [Jan. 6, 1959], No. 493/59. Class 106 (1). A code converter converts a pure binary number into binary coded decimal or sterling by repeated addition and/or subtraction of a diminishing series of binary coded constants, the result of each addition or subtraction, according to whether it is positive or negative, causing a 1 or a 0 to be applied to the output. The number to be converted is entered into conversion register 2 in series mode. According to whether the sign is positive or negative in cell 3 detector 9 connects register 2 to subtractor 6 or adder 5. At the same time counter 22 actuates constants selector 26 to select the appropriate senior constant. On the decimal scale this is 8 x 10<SP>n</SP> and is selected in known manner from inspection of the contents of register 2. This constant is added to or subtracted from the original number and re-entered into register 2. According to whether the sign in cell 3 is now + or -, the detector 9 through register selector 10 enters 1 or 0 in the first place of register 11. The process repeats using as constants 4 x 10<SP>n</SP>, 2 x 10<SP>n</SP> and 1 x 10<SP>n</SP>, after which the next entries are made in register 12 in respect of the next decimal denomination. If as a result of the least step in respect of a denomination the number in the register 2 is negative, detector 9 inhibits counter 22 and the constant concerned is re-added to the number. The output registers 11-21 may control card punches. In respect of binary to sterling conversions a different set of constants is used and the series includes a few constants which are repeated.
