894,633. Fuel elements. DIEBNER, K. Nov. 5, 1958 [Dec. 3, 1957], No. 35510/58. Class 39 (4). A nuclear reactor core is formed of a mass of randomly arranged, Raschig ring type, fuel elements. Each element, Fig. 1, comprises the fuel 1 and a protective coating 2. The fuel 1 may be uranium metal or uranium carbide and 2 can be either a metal sheath or a ceramic. Alternatively, the ring may be formed completely from a ceramic, for example mixed with uranium dioxide. The rings may have circular or square cross-section and have rounded edges to reduce flow resistance. The reactor, Fig. 2, comprises a pressure vessel 4, coolant circuit 7, and heat exchanger 8. The consumed fuel elements are removed from the reactor by operation of slide 16. Raschig rings of moderator material may be mixed with the fuel rings.
