Abstract
879,183. Nuclear reactors. BOYD Ltd., WINNETT. July 13, 1959 [Sept. 2, 1958], No. 28177/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor has a solid moderator, elongated fuel elements horizontally arranged in the moderator, and passageways for vertical flow of coolant gas. Preferably the fuel elements are in horizontal tubes across which the coolant flows. In Fig. 3 graphite tubes 10 containing discs of plutonium, uranium or thorium monocarbides are arranged in ribbed graphite tubes 15 which may be finned. These tubes and the graphite moderator blocks 16 are shaped to form sinuous vertical coolant passages 20. Graphite plates 17 are supported loosely by the moderator blocks and support, through keys 29, the tubes 15. In the tubes 15 the direction of minimum Wigner growth is parallel to the hole, in the blocks 16 it is vertical and in the plates it is horizontal and in the plane of the plates; the blocks 16 are keyed to their neighbours above and below and may have vertical control rod channels 32a. Alternative materials are : fuel, higher carbides and oxides of fissile metals; moderator, BeO or a BeO-graphite mixture; coolant, N 2 or CO 2 .
