Abstract

894,502. Artificial islands. SARO (ANGLESEY) Ltd. Jan. 22, 1959 [Jan. 24, 1958], No. 2462/58. Class 68(2). Jacking means for producing relative movement between a base structure 21 and an elongated member 12, such as a pile, in a direction along the axis of the pile comprise abutments which have parallel side faces and concave end faces 38, 39, spaced along the member and includes a power operated jack and two stepping members 20, 31 which can move relative to one another and to the elongated member, the jacking device operating between the two stepping members or between each stepping member and the base, and locking means 32, 33 carried by each stepping member to lock it to the elongated member, the locking means comprising a rotary member 42 which has a cylindrical head 44 with a diametral groove 45 whose width is slightly greater than the width of the abutments, and means for rotating the member 42 between the positions where the groove 45 is parallel to or at right angles to the abutment blocks. The jacking mechanism comprises the lower stepping member 20 secured to the base and an upper cross-piece 25 connected to the base by side members 26 and 27. Extending between the cross-pieces 20 and 25 are two piston-rods 24 which have pistons 28 secured to their midpoint. On each piston slides a double acting cylinder 29 and the cylinders are connected together by the second stepping member 31. The locking members are rotated through 90 degrees by an hydraulic motor of the oscillating vane type.
