Abstract
963,973. Ratchet gearing. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Dec. 13, 1960 [Sept. 14, 1959], No. 31318/59. Heading F2Q. An indexing mechanism for a shaft 5 comprises an arm 1 pivotally mounted at 13 between plates 2 which are oscillatable about the shaft axis, the arm carrying a key 4 which, on the working stroke, is adapted to engage one of a number of recesses 15 in a shaft flange and thereby to rotate the shaft through an angular step. Oscillation of the arm 1 about the shaft axis is effected by a piston 8 working in a cylinder 10 under the action of pneumatic or hydraulic pressure and engaging a radially extending pin 6 secured to the end of the arm 1. The angular movement of the plates 2 is limited by the engagement of a rigid stop 9 with slots 16 provided in the plates 2. The return stroke of the piston 8 may be effected by fluid pressure or by means of a spring. The shaft 5 is prevented from reverse movement by suitable mechanical means, not shown.
