Abstract

894,149. Valves. ACF INDUSTRIES Inc. Dec. 7, 1959, No. 41440/59. Class 135. An expanding gate valve 10 comprises recesses 16, 17 having loosely-mounted therein seat-rings 18, 19 each ring being provided with a resiliently deformable sealing member 36 which projects from the face of the ring so that upon closure of the valve the face of the ring does not contact the opposing wall of the recess. The valve closure member comprises two portions 22, 24 held together by a spring 30 so that, in operation, when the closure member is moved to the closed position shown, a projection 28 on the portion 24 abuts the valve casing and thereby causes the closure member to be expanded against the rings 18, 19 and thus compress the sealing-members 36. During the initial opening movement of the valve, as shown in Fig. 3, the pressure of the expanded closure member acting on the surface of the ring 19 is removed, thereby permitting the upstream fluid pressure to act upon that surface and so maintain a clearance in order to facilitate easy operation of the valve. In a modification, the surfaces of the rings 18, 19 in contact with the closure member are also provided with a sealing-ring. Specifications 309,711 and 702,570 are referred to.
